Shirley A. Stockman

August 4, 1930 — January 9, 2024

Castleton – Shirley Ann (Dumar) Stockman passed away peacefully at home on January 9, 2024, in the company of her son, Steven, and her home health care aide, Hariette.

Shirley was born in the home of her parents, Nylia (Champagne) and Cloid Dumar, in South Schodack, NY on August 4, 1930. For grades 1-4, she was a proud student at the Clove Road Schoolhouse, which was a one room school about a mile from her parents’ home. She then attended Castleton Union School (now Castleton Elementary) graduating in 1948.

After high school, Shirley worked for NY Telephone Company in Albany, often traveling to and from work via the passenger train that stopped at that time in South Schodack. Following the death of her father in 1955, Shirley was appointed postmaster of South Schodack; there, she and her mother continued to operate both the post office and a general store until 1959.

In 1951, Shirley married the love of her life, James Stockman. Together, they designed and constructed their own home just a mile from South Schodack where they raised their three children, Sandra, Gale and Steven. Shirley was always an active and supportive parent, volunteering as a Girl Scout leader and a Cub Scout den mother, later becoming a proud parent of one Eagle Scout and a proud grandparent of three!

In the summers, Shirley and Jim could often be found working in their vegetable garden, a hobby they both enjoyed immensely. They and their family also took frequent camping trips to the Adirondacks, as well as throughout the Eastern US and Canada.

In later years, Shirley was often seen rooting for her grandchildren in various Maple Hill sports including soccer and basketball, or dining out with family and friends.

Shirley is survived by her son Steven Stockman (Weston, CT); daughter Sandy Kosina (Liverpool, NY); son-in-law Steven Roth (Hilton, NY); 6 grandchildren Rob Roth (Hilton, NY), Dan Roth (Rochester, NY), Katie Roth (Plainville, CT), Brian Kosina (Mason, OH), Suzie Kosina (Berkeley, CA), Nikki Choudhary (San Diego, CA); 6 great-grandchildren Jameson and Elliot Roth, Emily and Alex Kosina, Oscar and Maya Choudhary; many nieces and nephews; and her beloved home health care aides Hariette and Norma. In addition to her parents, Shirley was predeceased by her husband James Stockman, daughter Gale Roth, and sister Mary Dumar.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the wonderful staff of Unlimited Care Albany, who have taken such excellent care of Shirley over the past 6 and a half years. It was only through their dedication that she was able to remain in the house she called home for the past 65 years.

In accordance with Shirley’s wishes, all services will be private at the convenience of the family.
