My heart sank when I heard this news... My heart and prayers to the entire Ray family during this difficult time.
I graduated with Rob in '83 from MHHS. I mostly shared his friendship from the soccer field, and his love of basketball; mostly Saturday Rec at the HS. As with most of my classmates, our friendships with each other got stronger as we neared graduation, and we started cherishing our moments as our HS time dwindled. Most of mine came from a championship soccer season in the fall of 1982. As most of this team now says...Before there was 'Many', there was the 'First'. Robby anchored this team as one of the three captains, patrolling a mid-field that clearly redefined the soccer program for decades that followed. Along with a handful of other seniors, opposing teams rarely got through him to the Hill side of the field. Off the field, in the locker room and in training sessions, Robby mostly kept us in a calm demeanor, an 'even keel', never letting our good results or our frustrations overtake us. There were challenges, and good laughs for sure, but mostly...a lifetime of memories for all of us.
Off the field, in the hallway, and in class, I'll remember him for being confident in himself but not overly so, and sharing a good joke, or just a few simple words in passing. They were always well received and appreciated.
When I learned of his passing, and we shared much passion in our respective love of sports, I was instantly reminded of something that I typically share on the upcoming Veterans Day. It has new meaning this year. It comes from the WWI poem from John McCrae "Flanders Field", wherein the viewpoint is one of a soldier lost too soon to battle, asking us to carry their dreams forward.
Rest easy Rob....You sparked a pretty good fire .....
=======================
"Flanders Field"
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Ray family during this difficult time. I am still in disbelief of Rob's passing. Rob and I were close friends from way back in kindergarten to the present day. We shared countless laughs and good times together and I was looking forward to many more. I have many fond memories of Rob and will cherish them forever. Rob was a great guy, always with a smile and I was honored to call him my friend. RIP Rob!

Rob was a classmate of mine. I traveled with the basketball team as a statistician. He was always kind and his smile lit up the room. So sad to hear this news. My deepest condolences to his family during this difficult time.
