Late condolences to the family of John.
I remember John as my teacher in High School and mentor in the Media Center. Also his humor and his commitment to keeping in touch with his father via HAM Radio every morning at school, WB2YCR was his call handle. Loved all that he did and stood for as a teacher, mentor and honest human being
John is missed and may Gods blessing be with his family. Thanks John for all the fond memories.

Mr Kienzle was truly an amazing human. I was blessed to be in his 8th grade/9th grade Social Studies classes in 1976/1977. He left a lasting impression and gave me a peek into other parts of the world and cultures. I had a pen pal from Africa thanks to his efforts. We had special guests who lived in other parts of the world who would come in and talk about their life. Mr Kienzle allowed me take home one of his HAM Radio units for a few months and listen to stations/conversations from all over the world. I was part of his Media Men team that assisted the school with media when needed. He was very generous with his time and always made me feel important and part of the group. I graduated in 1979 and as I made my way through the world in the years to come, I came to appreciate his friendship and teachings more and more. How lucky I was to have crossed paths at the right time with him and all of the incredible people in my graduating class. I hope to continue to honor his legacy with random acts of kindness and generosity in whatever years I have left. Thanks Mr Kienzle for making a difference and for living your life out loud.

I was floored to learn of John's death. I haven't seen him since I was a senior and he a sophomore at Albany State. We were both active in the radio station, which had been founded 2 years earlier. But the station was notorious for absorbing all your spare time, so when I went student teaching, I had to drop out. Unfortunately I never ran across John after that, even though I taught in Averill Park for a couple of years. It's plain from all the comments that he was an extraordinary teacher. 55 years after we lost touch, he obviously was still getting a lot out of life.

My heartfelt condolences to you at this time.
Mr. Kienzle had an energy unparalleled by any other. His love for learning and his championing for students was infectious. I am a greater person for having been a student of his. When I started working in the education field, a co-worker asked where I went to school and upon hearing "Maple Hill" the first statement back was "I love John Kienzle, what an inspiration!" Everyone that came in contact with John felt loved and inspired. I will never forget sitting in his classroom, running into him in town, his genuine interest in how one was, or that great smile.
Thank you for sharing him with all of us.

My all time favorite teacher from my first nap in K til my last undergrad class! ANY student who embraced an interest in a subject was encouraged to passionately pursue it & he became that student’s biggest cheerleader to uncover as much knowledge as they could. He fostered and fed my desire to fly & become and A.F. pilot, even taking a few of us up in a private plane several times. He piqued my interest in exploring the four corners of the globe and its customs and cultures. There’ve been many occasions that some random fact about a foreign friend’s homeland comes out of my mouth during conversation & they’re amazed I know so much about their country. I realize the knowledge came from way back in HS or in my continued reading that he inspired through his unique style. I’ve been in Japan & India and heard Kon'nichiwa & Namaste and instantly thought of Mr K and his classroom door greetings ... handing out one page lesson summaries, wearing a fez or local garb etc.
He abhorred ignorance, embraced being different, encouraged individuals and absolutely loved teaching. Even at a young age it was a fascinating and shining example! He embodied what every teacher, parent and civic leader should strive to achieve, in a word- PASSION! He will be missed but his legacy in the community and his hundreds of students will live forever!

I remember when Mr Kienzle first came to Maple Hill High..what a different approach to teaching! He made learning fun that’s the magic he had within him. His passion for the Middle East was magnificent .. from the foods we cooked to the Turkish hat he wore with the tassel swinging to and fro. He always made you laugh made you interested in learning. He was definitely an out of the box teacher and I am so glad I was his student.he was a great mentor . His passing will never take away the legacy he left to all his students .. What a great man! So lively and full of fun. I watched from afar. Knew him from driving his field trip classes to and fro. There was always something to learn on those trips --for me. I was always welcomed to participate when possible. Meeting John at the grocery store he'd always give me one of his little flash lights or a pen. History educator! Wonderful man. My condolences to Mrs. Kienzle and the family.

My family and I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Mrs. Kienzle and family. I was fortunate to be in Mr.Kienzle’s first class. He would also teach my wife Gretchen and my two sons Jake and Luke. The impact that he had on our family and our community cannot be overstated. As a 9th grader my classmates and I were in a bewildered state of amazement at this dynamo who pushed, prodded and inspired us to follow him. He made it almost impossible to remain apathetic and would go the extra mile for any student. He was the first teacher to immerse us in strange and wonderful cultures. In short, he opened our eyes to the world. A great Educator who inspired so many of us to be more than we ever thought we could be.

An absolutely amazing man, musician and teacher. Cannot imagine anyone passing through his classes who could not have been inspired to learn more about the world, and realize that we can learn our whole lives. So glad he was able to have a second career after 36 years of teaching - and reach/inspire even more folks with his music and enthusiasm. We can even get a glimpse of his magic by watching/sharing some of his Music Wizard Presents shows on Youtube! He made made a difference, and the ripples are still continuing. John taught me to copy CW (morse code) at 5 words per minute, study for the exam, to get my novice ticket in 1985. While now I can copy at 35 wpm, it's because of his tenacity that I was able to pass that exam. In at least one instance, he's the reason why I am an EE today (Along with Jerry Hill, Stan Turner, and a few others). Fair Weather and Following Seas John. God Bless you and your family.

In life there are major life changing variables. These include world events, major accomplishments, birth/death of loved one’s and sharing time with amazing people. As a young person I didn’t know or appreciate what he really taught me. He taught it anyway.
As the experiences of life have gone on, I have realized that he was the greatest teacher I have ever been lucky enough to have. He taught me how to learn, this was so much more important than any key vocabulary word or assignment. His lessons about the 4” between my ears are some of the most valuable things I have.
Thank you to his family. Thank you for sharing him with the rest of us. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten.

I remember the shock my husband and I felt on HS Parent Night, when we walked into Mr. Kienzle's classroom. What a wonderful space, and the guy with the cape and the wizard hat was the teacher???! We decided if we'd had a teacher like him, school would have been much better. Over the years, our respect for him and his love of knowledge and teaching increased, and he became a friend to all of us. He was a rare and wonderful man, and lived his life well. We will miss him.

One of the five most impactiful teachers I have had. In many ways, his unabashed curiosity and love for learning were instrumental in supporting my own academic journey. I remember, distinctly, watching the launch of the space shuttle challenger in the gym with most of the school. Mr. Kienzle was running around the gym making sure all of the AV and his "crew" were working the way they should be. Then the launch, and the shocked silence. I remember seeing Mr. K standing there crying - something I had never seen a teacher do (and I was a senior). I remember, in the days before "trauma support" teams, etc. Mr. K spending the entire class the following day talking about the incident, and allowing us to talk about it too. That and all of the other funny memories that most of us who had been his students would have had. Wish I had been able to talk to him one last time so he could see the imapct that he had on me, my life, and in some ways the lives of my kids and the kids I've coached, etc. Safe flight home, Mr. K!

Mr. Kienzle was one of my favorite high school teachers. Always kind and full of energy. He made learning fun. I fondly recall his having students prepare a "dish" to share of a recipe from whatever country we were studying at the time. He always dressed with flare in traditional outfits from various nations. Although we always dreaded to two finger notebook test, today I recall it with a smile. He expected his students to tow the line. Organization was a must. Rest in peace Sir. NAMASTE
