Port Charlotte, FL-Robert W. Leonard (Bob), 78, formerly of Castleton, passed away suddenly Thursday March 14, 2013 in Port Charlotte, FL. Bob was predeceased by his beloved wife Lucille (Carney), his brother Gordon (Red) Leonard, and his sister Jean Schroder.
Bob is survived by his 3 sons, Daniel (Pam) Barnes, Hudson, NY, Steven (Carmen) Leonard, East Greenbush, NY and Brian (Patti) Leonard, Port Charlotte, FL; his grandchildren, Kyle (Katelyn) Leonard, Colorado, Sabrina Leonard, Cohoes, NY, Sean, Katie and Kelly Leonard, Florida; a brother, George (Rose) Leonard; and a sister, Winifred Leonard.
Bob was a US Marine veteran stationed in Mount Fuji, Japan in the 1950’s. He worked for many employers to keep food on the table including Welch and Grey Lumber in Albany, O’Connor’s Woodshed in East Greenbush and Dieckelmann Lumber in Valatie. Bob also worked nights as a policeman for the Village of Castleton for over 20 years. He was a life member of the Castleton Fire Company and worked for the Castleton Highway Department before retiring. Bob loved sports, country music, spaghetti westerns and mini-hot dogs.
In his younger days he played softball on the Fire House team and fast-pitch at Coyne Field in Rensselaer. His two favorite pro teams were the NY Giants and the Boston Red Sox.
Bob was all about family; he loved his sons and grandchildren, and was always interested in what was going on in their lives. He will be greatly missed by his entire family. Bob’s quick wit and sense of humor were priceless.
Calling hours will be Friday March 22. 2013 from 5-8 pm at Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave., Castleton, NY. His funeral will be Saturday 2 pm in the funeral home. Burial will follow in New Sacred Heart Cemetery.
