Robert R. Niemitalo , age 87, of Castleton, died on January 12, 2015 at the Teresian House in Albany, NY.
Born July 24, 1927 in Cleon Michigan, he proudly served his country in the US NAVY during WWII aboard the USS Bennington (CV-20) and the USS Clarion River (LSMR-409) during the Korean War.
He was well known and respected in his community being employed at & part owner of Rensselaer Appliance and for his service on the East Greenbush School District Board of Education during the 1970’s. Later in life one of his proudest accomplishments was graduating from Hudson Valley Community College Majoring in NYS History. He enjoyed camping, fishing , and the Racino.
He was predeceased by his wife Helen Houser Niemitalo and his son Eric Niemitalo.
Survivors include his sister Mary Joyce McKerchie, of Sault St Marie, Michigan, Daughter Linda (Larry) Fox of Saratoga NY, son Robert (Ellen) Niemitalo of Port Townsend, WA, and son Glenn (Kathy) Niemitalo of Castleton, NY. Also his grandchildren Susan and Jimmy Fox of Saratoga, NY, Michelle Currier of Apex, NC, Kimberley (Adam) Spach of Holly Springs, NC, Lee (Sarah) Niemitalo of Castleton NY, Sharon Niemitalo of Brunswick NY, Danielle (Tom Kozaczuk) Niemitalo of Watervliet NY, and Trisha (Keith) Vecchione of Brooklyn, NY, along with seven great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers , contributions may be made in his memory to Peppertree Rescue, P.O. Box 2396,Albany, NY, 12220-0396
Calling hours will be Saturday January 17th 11 am – 1 pm at the Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Avenue Castleton-on-Hudson, NY 12033. Services will immediately follow calling hours at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Horizonview Cemetery with Military Honors.
