Castleton- Richard Phelps "RP" Hilbert, 79, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, May 30, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Richard was born in Elmira, NY to the late Margaret (Waples) and Alfred Hilbert. He proudly served our country in the New York Army National Guard from 1970-1976. Richard spent 32 years as a facilities manager at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), in Troy, NY. After retiring from RPI, he worked alongside his son-in-law, Thomas Hall, at Hall Construction and Landscaping up until his passing. Richard was a past master and member of Sunnyside Lodge for 33 years. He was a communicant of Emmanuel Reformed Church and served as a deacon and youth group leader for many years. Richard was also involved with numerous camping organizations. RP had a kind heart and was always willing to lend a helping hand to family, friends, and community organizations.
In addition to his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brother, Edward Hilbert. He is survived by his wife, Donna (Swartz) Hilbert; his children, Sandra (Thomas) Hall, David (Annmarie) Hilbert, and Kimberly (Scott) Canavan. Richard was the proud grandfather of Kyle, Tyler, Connor, and Rebecca Hall, Melissa, Nicole, Evan, and Hannah Hilbert, Ethan and Julia Saxby, Rachael and Colby Frazier, and Andrew Canavan. Richard also had many cherished friends throughout the community.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Richard's family from 2:00-5:00 p.m., on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Castleton Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave Castleton, NY 12033. A funeral service will take place at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, June 3, 2024, at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow the funeral service at Horizon View Cemetery, Brookview Station Road, Castleton, NY. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Richard's memory to the Castleton Volunteer Ambulance, 1700 Brookview Road, Castleton-On-Hudson, NY 12033 or the Niverville Fire Department, PO Box 422, Niverville, NY 12130.
