Keegan, John P.

Castleton-John P. (Jack) Keegan, 89, of Castleton, passed away on November 26, 2014 at home.

Jack was born in Schodack Landing on Oct. 4, 1925 and lived in the Castleton/Schodack area his whole life. He attended the Castleton School System, where he loved sports and was one of the rare four-letter athletes. He was an especially gifted baseball player, who in later years played semi-pro baseball in Albany and was scouted by the Major Leagues.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served through the duration of the war until discharged in 1946. He was a radioman on the USS Santa Fe and experienced many of the key battles in the Pacific theatre. He remained a very active member in the VFW and American Legion for the rest of his life. And he was a regular in the Castleton Memorial Day Parade.

After leaving the Navy he began work at the Fort Orange Paper Company in Castleton and worked there as a mechanic for over 46 years. He was a proud union member.

Jack is survived by his loving children, Tracy Ann Sukup of Castleton and John Paul Keegan of Nassau. He was also predeceased by two children, Kelly Ann and Terence Michael Keegan. And “Grampy” will also be very missed by his four grandchildren, Scott and Shaun Sukup and Christopher and Jacob Keegan.
He was predeceased by his siblings Mary Katherine Osuch, Ann Van Hensbergen, Peter Keegan, Betty Downey and Marjorie Potts,
He was a loving “Uncle Jack” to many nieces and nephews. And also a friend to anyone he met. And willing to sing an old melody to anyone who would listen.
