Jean Hutchings, 94, former nurse, world traveler
Castleton – Jean E. Hutchings, 94, of Benedict Street, died peacefully on November 3rd, 2018, in her beloved home that she built and shared with her husband Ernest Hutchings who predeceased her 26 years ago.
Jean was born in Albany, NY, the daughter of John Peter Johnson and Johanna M. Landmann, and lived in Castleton most of her life. She was a graduate of Castleton Union School in 1942 and Amsterdam City Hospital School of Nursing in 1945. In 1945, she married the love of her life, Ernie, a Navy veteran of the Pacific theater of World War II. For many years Jean was a surgical nurse in the operating rooms of Memorial Hospital in Albany. Upon retirement she worked briefly at Barnwell Nursing Home in Valatie and Rosewood Gardens in Rensselaer, as well as volunteering for the American Red Cross. She and Ernie loved their time at camp up on Schroon Lake, especially with their children and grandchildren. A great adventurer all her life, she travelled much of America and Canada with Ernie, and later independently and with friends around the world: Great Britain, Italy, Ireland, Egypt, Peru, the Amazon, Turkey, Russia, and the Czech Republic. Jean was a woman of faith, served as a Sunday School teacher and member of the choir and women’s circles at her churches in Castleton.
Survivors include her children Patricia Thorne (Richard) of Castleton, Paul Hutchings (Judy) of Castleton, and John Hutchings (Gary Woods) of Rexford, her sister Virginia VanBeusichem of Castleton, 4 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
At Jean’s request, there will be no calling hours or funeral, but a Celebration of her Life will be held for extended family and friends on Sunday, November 18th, 2018, at 12:00 at the American Legion Melvin Roads Post 1231, located at 200 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush. Burial will take place privately at Mountain View Cemetery in Castleton.
Jean was always a great supporter of various charities. Those who wish to honor her memory are encouraged to make a donation to the American Red Cross, Wounded Warriors, Castleton Ambulance, Shriners, Capital City Rescue Mission, or charity of their choice.
