South Schodack- James Kenney, a beloved resident of South Schodack, NY, passed away peacefully at his home on July 28, 2024 after achieving his goal of living to 90! He was the son of the late William V. Kenney and Margaret G. O’Donnell Kenney and was predeceased by siblings William V. Jr, Patricia, Margaret and John. Jim remained a devoted husband to his late wife Mary for 65 years. He was an inspiring father to his children: Stephen Kenney, Patricia M. Kenney, Nancy Bakhuizen and her husband Gerrit, and Thomas Kenney and his wife Elizabeth Morcom. He took great pride in raising his children to be fiercely independent. He was a proud grandfather to Katherine (Justin) Friedman, Jenna (Logan Hazard) Bakhuizen, Michele (Ryan) Martino, and Katharyn (David) Ridgeway. Jim is also survived by his brother Raymond (Nancy Berlove) Kenney, and sister-in-law, Judy Zuchero, great grandsons, several cousins, nieces and nephews, and dearest friends the Berneys and Harkenesses, whom he cherished as extended family.
Jim’s life was marked by his commitment to education and his community. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, and for 31 years he inspired countless students as a dedicated English teacher in the East Greenbush Central School District. His passion for teaching extended beyond the classroom, as he never stopped sharing his wisdom, enthusiasm for learning and proper use of grammar, and giving driving instructions. He had a keen interest in politics, current and local events, and was a devoted reader of the daily newspaper. Jim formed many lasting relationships with high school friends, coworkers and neighbors in Clearview Heights. He enjoyed languages and dialects, crossword puzzles, reading, and watching UConn women’s basketball and the Yankees. His love for sports extended to his role as a coach and umpire, and he enjoyed mentoring youth on and off the field. Most of all he loved, and was very proud, of his family.
Though Jim is no longer with us, his legacy and humor lives on in the hearts of all who knew him. We are deeply saddened by his passing, yet find comfort in the many wonderful memories he left behind. Jim was a remarkable man, and his love and influence will be felt for generations to come.
In accordance with Jim’s wishes, there will be no formal services. A remembrance will be held at a later date to celebrate his life. Jim enjoyed listening to public radio and was a long time supporter of WMHT and WAMC. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the public radio station of your choice.
