Guy F. Rappold, 93, of Castleton-On-Hudson passed away at home on March 9, 2023. Mr. Rappold was a lifelong resident of Castleton-on-Hudson, New York. He is the son of the late Phillip and Florence Rappold. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 37 years, Susan M. Rappold. He is survived by his daughter, Jan Amsler (Bill) of Jacksonville, Florida. Mr. Rappold is predeceased by his grandson, Robert (Bobby) Amsler. He is also survived by his cousins, Ruth Wilder of Louisville, Kentucky and Janice Smith, of Hague, New York. Mr. Rappold is survived by his devoted friend and neighbor, Colleen Waters Fratianni, and her children, Cathleen (Chuck, Emma and Liliana) Peter, Jay and Evan Fratianni. Mr. Rappold “Rappy” was their grandfather in all ways and was an important part of their lives growing up.
Mr. Rappold proudly served in the United States Navy for 25 years, 1947-1972. He retired with the rank of Chief Petty Officer from Pensacola, Florida. Mr. Rappold proudly served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He served on many ships, and lived in many different places during his time in the Navy. Mr. Rappold also enjoyed delivering food for the Regional Food Bank for over 10 years.
Mr. Rappold is a 70 year member of the Gerald O’Neil American Legion Post in Rensselaer, New York. He is also a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Alberta, Alabama. Mr. Rappold recently joined the Peter Andrews Castleton Memorial VFW Post in Castleton, and was looking forward to participating in their events. Besides his distinguished naval career, he was also very proud of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
Mr. Rappold was an avid gardener until he was 88 years old. His favorite pastimes were taking care of his and his neighbor’s properties, helping others, and telling stories. Mr. Rappold also enjoyed a love of classic cars.
The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Community Hospice for all of their support and care over the last year. In particular, thank you Grace Sweet, for everything you did. In addition, the family would also like to thank his full-time caregivers Amanda Laurange, Diana Mahoney, and Michele Carey for the phenomenal care they gave to Mr. Rappold. Without them, Mr. Rappold’s wish to be at home would not have happened.
A funeral service will be held on March 13, in the Castleton Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Ave. Castleton at 12:00 p.m. Relatives and friends are invited to call prior to the service from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Interment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery, Castleton.
