Eckert, Emma G
CASTLETON - Emma G Eckert, 104, of Simons Rd. died Thursday May 3, 2018 at Ludders Country Home in West Sand Lake, NY. Up until late March, Emma had the good fortune to live independently in her home on Simons Rd., supported by her close network of neighbors, family and friends.
Born in Montgomery NY on June 25, 1913, Emma was the daughter of Mary and Basil Guattery. She was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1932 and the University of the State of New York, State College for Teachers Albany in 1936. Emma earned a BA with license to teach the secondary subjects of chemistry and biology.
After graduation, she worked for the New York State Health Department, beginning as a lab technician and advancing to senior bacteriologist, with a focus on research in pneumonia and diphtheria.
Emma was married in 1951 and moved to Castleton with her husband Bill. The city girl quickly and lovingly embraced country life and her new roles as wife and mother to Elizabeth and Jeanne. Emma was accomplished at gardening, canning, baking, sewing and enjoyed watching cooking shows and collecting recipes. She also had lesser known talents including chair caning and oil painting. Emma’s warm and gentle spirit was beloved by all who knew her.
Emma is survived by daughters Elizabeth Marshall (Mike) and Jeanne Cohl (Marty), grandchildren Cara, Alyssa, Megan and Jonathan, brother Raymond Guattery, and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and grandson Daniel Cohl.
