Ellen E. McKnight, Castleton-on-Hudson

Ellen E. McKnight, 98 passed away suddenly, but peacefully on Friday October 27, 2017. Born on June 6, 1919 in Castleton-on-Hudson, she was the daughter of Herman F. Gietz and Kathryn Landmann Gietz. She was a graduate of Castleton High School, Class of 1937 and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in NYC, Class of 1940. She enlisted in the US Army Nurses Corps and served during WWII. She attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the National Defense Ribbon, and the Woman’s Army Corps Service Ribbon.

She worked as a registered nurse and retired as the school nurse at Maple Hill High School. She was a communicant of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of Castleton VFW Post 7337, Castleton Study Club, and Castleton Seniors.

Ellen was the wife of the late Lt. Nevin W. Shaak and the late Lt. Col. James D. McKnight. She was also the sister of the late Rev. Harold (Rosalie) Gietz and the late Winifred Gietz. Ellen is survived by her 5 sons - David (Darlene) McKnight, Douglas (Sandra) McKnight, Colin McKnight (David Herrington), Stuart (Dianne) McKnight, and Donald (Patricia) McKnight; her beloved grandchildren - Erin (Christopher) Daley, Adam McKnight, Emily (Stephen) Caruso, Scott McKnight, Matthew McKnight, Nicholas McKnight, Ryan McKnight, Trevor McKnight, John (Lindsey) Curtis and Kristen (Kirk) Holt; her cherished great grandchildren - Landon Daley, Ella Daley, and Finley Holt; and two nieces, Kathy Sacchiero and Jan Curtis.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, November 1st from 4:00 to 8:00 PM at the Ray Funeral Home, 59 Seaman Avenue, Castleton-on-Hudson. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 2nd at Trinity Lutheran Church, 68 Green Avenue, Castleton-on-Hudson, NY, beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
