Castleton, N.Y. - Dirk Van Ort, 72, of Castleton, died suddenly on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 from a progressive illness. He was born in Albany, N.Y. and is predeceased by his parents Julius and Dorothy (Kittle) Van Ort of Castleton.
For 20 years, Dirk managed a family business, Golden Nugget Merchandising, that provided amusements for charity fundraising events in the Capital Region. He was a graduate of Hudson Valley Community College and held several civil service positions at the state and local level. He also worked at the Lebanon Valley and Malta raceways where he made many lifelong friends.
He enjoyed playing golf and spending time with his sons. Dirk was active with the Schodack Valley Volunteer Fire Company and had been Chief for 15 years. He was willing to respond and help out the community whenever needed. Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Kathleen (Meister) Van Ort of Castleton; son Daniel, his wife Jennifer (Ciulla) Van Ort and their daughter Katie Van Ort of Mechanicville; and son Kevin Van Ort and his partner Rachel Moseley of Troy.
Friends and relatives are invited to call at Ray Funeral Home in Castleton from 3:00 to 7:00 on Sunday, January 8, 2017. Graveside service will be at 11:00 on Monday, January 9, 2017 at Horizon View Cemetery in Castleton.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Dirk's memory to Schodack Valley Volunteer Fire Company or the Castleton Volunteer Ambulance.
