Shizuko Kashiwagi Van De Wal (Susie), a 70-year resident of Castleton, NY, passed away August 3, 2023 with family by her side. She was 92 years old.

Susie was born December 12, 1930, at the base of Mount Fuji, in the city of Fujiyoshida, Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan. She met her beloved husband Sgt. Kenneth Van De Wal while he was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. They married in Japan on May 22, 1953, before leaving for Castleton, NY.

Susie proudly became an American citizen on September 17, 1970.

Susie will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her for her love of family, sense of humor, kind and giving nature, and beautiful spirit.

Susie is survived by her children, Kenneth Van De Wal Jr. (Pat) of Altamont, NY, Elizabeth Culkin of Clifton Park, NY, Dale Van De Wal (Debra) of North Berwick, ME, her grandchildren Joshua Van De Wal, Jason Van De Wal, Laurie Culkin, Patrick Culkin, several great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Susie was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Van De Wal, her daughter, Brenda, her father, Shozo Kashiwagi, her mother, Sen Watanabe Kashiwagi, her sister, Toshiko Kashiwagi, and her brother, Mikio Kashiwagi.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family, by Castleton Funeral Home, LLC, Castleton, NY.
